Whitby Isn’t Warm In Winter

  1. Those are gorgeous photos.

    1. Mikeachim says:

Thanks. :) But it’s the place, not the photos….

Frankly, I’m proud I managed to take them without my finger-ends snapping off with the cold.

  2. We aren’t going to try selling ad space to Whitby as a tourist destination?

    1. Mikeachim says:

“Whitby – Where Heat Itself Goes To Die”. Or “You don’t have to be completely impervious to cold to live here, but….no, wait, actually you do”.

Having said that, it’s a lovely town and nice and warm in the summer, and it’s only during the winter that the wind slices through you like a greased katana and the waves fling themselves hundreds of feet inland just to grapple you to the ground and suck you out to a screaming, bubbling death hundreds of feet under roiling green riptide-churned waters.

I think the chances of the Whitby tourist board contacting me to place a banner are increasingly slim. Not much good at this marketing lark, me.

Evocative imagery, Mike. A great series. I really like the third one down, great contrast and drama.

    1. Mikeachim says:

Thanks, Ant. :) The original wasn’t quite as bleak and infernal-looking, I’d admit. Digital post-processing jiggery-pokery was had.

      1. Richard P says:

        Digital post is cheating.

Unless it looks awesome…. then I’ll let you get away with it.

I’m on a lomo medium format kick right now…. I challenge you to do the same.

        1. Mikeachim says:

Deal. Let me get up to speed on the basics, and I’m there. Particularly intrigued by one reviewers saying “the Lomo is so unpredictable in photographic quality that it’s an experimentalist’s dream”.

Cheating is always cheating. That’s the appeal. However, slightly less glibly, I’ve just read a Lonely Planet book on photography that was frank about the need for jiggery-pokery (not negating the need for a good photo in the first place). After all, a lot of digital alteration is stuff non-digital photographers did with equipment: filters, black & white film, etc.

All technology (from sticks used to poke tasty ants out of nests, through to the iPhone) is cheating. Discuss.

    loverly pix michael. i dig.

    1. Mikeachim says:

      Ta. :)

Taken with the old camera, these.

Which means I should do a return visit with the new one and see what happens…

  5. Jimbo says:

    Full of vampires too…

    1. Mikeachim says:

I kept my eye out for battered-looking ships disgorging black dogs, but I couldn’t see any. Although I did get hit by a fish thrown from a fishing boat. Unless Dracula was in deep cover, I doubt if that qualifies…

Ah, Dracula. The good old days of vampires, when young people were scared of them, rather than adoring their emaciated cheekbones and pining after the caress of their blood-red lips. See, the thing is about vampires is they’re…well, a bit dead. So it’s a bit like necrophilia.

Furthermore, vampires are rather likely to tear your limbs off when they’re trying to subdue you enough to siphon off your vein-claret. Call me old fashioned, but I see this as a bit of a dampener on all things amorous.

      1. Richard P says:

Whats not for the young to like about them? Unemployed, but still good looking, fashionable, and getting the hot girls… its a dream. Plus they can booze and shoot up as much as they like, and it never hurts them… a dangerous new role model methinks…. they need to watch ‘Interview with a Vampire’…

        1. Mikeachim says:

All well and good, but here’s a question.

          Undead.

          So, no beating heart.

          So, no blood pressure.

So, no ability to pump blood to certain areas of the body.

I hope I needn’t continue. Anyway, if someone could explain how this works in an undead context, I’d be very grateful, although there may be flinching.

I was about to give you a hard time about showing Canada by the water in winter and being surprised that it’s cold, but then I realized there’s more than one Whitby :)

    1. Mikeachim says:

There is – and I was entirely unaware of this until I Googled. :)

(I’m fascinated that east of Toronto there are also: York, Scarborough, Pickering, Whitby and Darlington).

  7. That is some awesome photography! Great shots!

    1. Mikeachim says:

      Thank you sir.

Although I don’t trust your judgement because, as we’ve established elsewhere, you’re mad.

      ;)

  8. Richard P says:

Your photography is becoming fantastic….. I’m becoming jealous….. this is not good!

    1. Mikeachim says:

It certainly isn’t. When you’re aspiring to do something I’ve done, I know I’ve made a wrong turn somewhere in life.

(But thank you all the same, matey).

After following your hilarious and informative tweets for weeks, I finally had the chance to sit down and take a jaunt through your blog. :-) I love, love, love these gorgeous pictures and feel inspired to head to the coast with all possible haste. :-) Have a great weekend!

    1. Mikeachim says:

      Aw. Thank you.

Although regarding the photos, those rollers should hint at the howling chill wind that was slicing right through our clothing. I remember having problems pressing the shutter on my camera because I couldn’t feel my finger anymore.
